Fatehpur Sikri

Emperor Akbar wanted to build himself a walled city away from Agra. He named the city Fatehpur Sikri, thereafter ruled it for some time before the lack of water supply compelled him to shift. However, during his time there, he planned a city that reflects the ingenuity of the ruler and continues to feed the curiosity of many visitors who throng the city.

Emperor Akbar was known for his keenness in architecture and he planned and constructed this city for 15 years in total. With different palaces, harems, court and a mosque.

The most prominent of these is the Buland Darwaza, the entry to the walled city, made from red sandstone. Birbal, who was a favourite of Akbar’s from his court, also has a monument called his home, keeping his religion, Hinduism, in mind it was designed different to the Mughal structures.
