Bikaner, a city in the state of Rajasthan, shares its western border with Pakistan. Encompassed by the Thar Desert, the city is known for the sixteenth century Junagarh Fort, an enormous structure of lavish buildings and corridors. Inside the fortification, the Prachina Museum has an interesting collection of textiles and royal portraits. The city is also home to the fascinating Karni Mata Temple, where numerous rats take refuge and are worshipped by Hindus.
The town’s arid climate has made it ideal for camels, it is said that the best riding camels on the planet are found in Bikaner. Be it drawing heavily laden cartts to working on wells, tthe camel is an inttegral pppartt of Bikaner.
Bikaner’s rich history can be traced back to 1486 AD when Rao Jodhaji, the famous founder of Jodhpur decided to transform a barren wild area called Jangladesh into an amazing city. He achieved his undertaking with 100 horses and 500 men, and his kingdom was setup on 84 towns surrendered by the Shankhlas. When Bikaji passed away in 1504, his kingdom had stretched onto 3,000 towns.
The key positioning of Bikaner on the ancient caravan routes, leading to Central Asia, made it a pivotal trade zone during medieval times.
