Welcome to India

Lufthansa LH 762 from Munich touched down in Delhi at 23:55. Anand, their driver, was waiting outside the international terminal with a warm smile and a marigold garland. He drove Simone and Valeria to The Lalit in their private Toyota Etios, helped them check in and left them to rest after the long journey from Bologna.

Agra

On to Agra and the Mughal fort

After breakfast we set off for Agra in Uttar Pradesh, around 200 km away. Once they had checked into the Clarks Shiraz and freshened up, Anand took them to the grand Agra Fort, built by Emperor Akbar and later extended by Jahangir and Shah Jahan, with its palaces, halls of private and public audience and formal gardens.

Jaipur

The Taj at sunrise, Fatehpur Sikri and Abhaneri

An early start: at 6:00 they were at the Taj Mahal as the sun came up, in the soft light that suits the white marble best. Shah Jahan built it for his queen Mumtaz Mahal, and it remains the great symbol of everlasting love. After breakfast back at the hotel we drove on towards Jaipur, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned city with its Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal and towering Buland Darwaza, and at the ancient stepwell of Abhaneri. They checked into the Alsisar Haveli and spent the evening wandering the city.

Jaipur

Amber Fort and the Pink City

Eleven kilometres outside Jaipur, they rode an elephant up to Amber Fort and its royal palaces. The rest of the day went to the Pink City laid out by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh: the honeycomb facade of the Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and its museum, the Jantar Mantar observatory and the white-marble Birla Mandir. In the evening they strolled through Jaipur's colourful markets full of textiles, pottery and handicrafts, then returned to the Alsisar Haveli.

Pushkar

Holy Pushkar

About 150 km and three and a half hours later, they reached Pushkar. After checking into the Gulab Niwas they walked down to the sacred lake, where pilgrims come to bathe on auspicious days, and visited the town's temples, among them the Brahma Temple, one of very few in India dedicated to Brahma.

Udaipur

Chittorgarh on the way to the City of Lakes

A 300 km day south to Udaipur, broken by the vast hilltop fort of Chittorgarh and its carved stone towers. Anand parked the Etios right beside one of them for a photo. That evening they checked into the Fateh Niwas and set out to explore Udaipur on foot.

A full day in Udaipur

A full day in Udaipur: the grand City Palace, the Jagdish Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and the folk art museum with its colourful collection of puppets, musical instruments and paintings. They spent a second night at the Fateh Niwas.

Jodhpur

Kumbhalgarh, Ranakpur and the Blue City

On the 280 km drive to Jodhpur we stopped at the great walls of Kumbhalgarh and at Ranakpur, one of the largest groups of Jain temples in India, famous for the Chaumukha, Neminath and Parsvanath temples. They checked into the Pal Haveli and spent the evening wandering the old city.

Jodhpur

Jodhpur, the Blue City

A day in Jodhpur: the marble cenotaph of Jaswant Thada, the Umaid Bhawan Palace and its heritage museum, and the huge Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest in India, with its palaces and royal collection of arms and artefacts. They spent another night at the Pal Haveli.

Mandawa

The painted havelis of Shekhawati

The longest drive of the trip, 350 km north into Shekhawati. After checking into Castle Mandawa they toured the town's mansions and painted havelis. These were the homes of wealthy merchants who later left the region, and their walls are still covered in frescoes, with village life going on around them.

Delhi

Back to Delhi and the old city

After 265 km back to Delhi, they checked into The Lalit for a rest. Later Anand took them into Old Delhi: the Red Fort, the Jama Masjid, the Meena Bazar, the busy lanes of Chandni Chowk and Raj Ghat.

New Delhi and goodbye

One last full day: Humayun's Tomb, the Lotus Temple, Qutub Minar, India Gate, the President's House and Parliament, Birla Temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and Connaught Place. After dinner in the market, Simone and Valeria filmed a few words with Anand under the evening streetlights, the video you can watch above. Then Anand drove them to the airport for their flight home to Munich.
